What makes a church who they are?

July 12, 2010

What makes a church the way they are? Some are strong in music, some are strong in teaching, some have drama and other creative worship expressions, some are youth-oriented. What makes each church lean towards a unique expression of ministry? Every church has certain core beliefs, core distinctive, and core values that make them who they are. Core beliefs are those beliefs that arise out of our basic theological understandings. From this theological foundation arise our core distinctive and core values. What we believe about God, about man, about the Holy Spirit affects the things we value and the characteristics we express.

Core distinctives arise out of our basic theology and our core beliefs. For City Bible Church, the root is in restoration of the church as seen in the book of Acts. Acts becomes the foundation to our developing of core distinctives. We have 30 recognizable characteristics that distinguish us, 30 traits that are an expression of our theology and the things we value.
