A Fresh Commitment to Preach

August 9, 2010

Martyn Lloyd-Jones said, “To me, the work of preaching is the highest and greatest and the most glorious calling to which anyone can be called.” Fulfilling that call is not without a cost and that cost is the commitment of the preacher. Robert McCheyne was one of the great preachers in the 1800s and it was said of him that “When he appeared in the pulpit, even before he had uttered a single world, people would begin to weep silently. The very sight of the man gave the impression that he had come from the presence of God and that he was to deliver a message from God.”

The first commitment a preacher must have in preaching the word of God is to be a person who knows God who spoke the word. Charles Spurgeon said of F.B. Meyer, “Meyer preaches as a man who has seen God face to face.” When we preach, we must preach as those who have encountered God and draw others into encountering Him for themselves.
