Servant-Leadership

September 1, 2010

Jesus had a great synonym for greatness – servant. In Mark 10:43-45 he said, “Whoever wants to be great must become a servant. Whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave. That is what the Son of Man has done: He came to serve, not to be served.”

When you responded to God’s vision for our lives, seeking to fulfill the call that He burned in your heart, servant-leadership is probably not what you envisioned. Like Elisha, we look to serve the prophet of the Lord, only to find that we spend the next twenty years pouring water on his hands and ministering in menial tasks. But servant-leadership is the foundation of true leadership in the kingdom of God. Jesus said there is no true leadership unless you are first a servant.

So what does a servant-leader look like?

  1. Servant-leadership is built upon serving, sacrificing, and seeking the greatest good of those being led.
  2. Servant-leadership has personal brokenness that makes them approachable.
  3. Servant-leadership helps others become more than they could be on their own.
  4. Servant-leadership serves those above them and below them the same.
  5. Servant-leadership transforms the way people think about themselves.
