What is the secret of the leaders that God has highly honored and blessed beyond anything they could have achieved on their own? What was their secret to success, their secret to miracle achievements and lasting impact on their world and ours?
This secret of making great leaders is the “shavar” factor. The Hebrew word “shavar” means “broken.” It has the idea of breaking into pieces, shattering, crushing, destroying, demolishing, and casting down.
Brokenness in Scripture has several applications. God breaks nations because of rebellion and sin. God allows a destruction to break people who live in rebellion and He also causes brokenness that allows Him to accomplish something significant in a person’s life.
Brokenness in the lives of leaders is desired by God. Leaders of influence and leaders of the future are leaders of brokenness. A broken leader is one who has responded to the dealings of God with a right attitude and has allowed a deep work of God’s grace. Here are a few signs of a broken leader.
1. Broken leaders know they must decrease and God must increase.
Think about John the Baptist. He had the humility and brokenness to serve Jesus’ ministry even when he had a sizable group of disciples. Broken leaders know that they need to continually take themselves and their ambition out of the picture so that God’s agenda and His kingdom can increase.
2. Broken leaders quickly forgive others who have caused personal injury.
Offense is one of the greatest killers of greatness. It locks you in an unhealthy mindset and restricts your pliability, your willingness to be molded and thereby used by God. Release the offense you are holding onto. Forgive and do not let offense get a foothold in your life.
3. Broken leaders have a deep sincerity.
Prayer is real and worship is done with real feeling. There is no hypocrisy here. When your spirit is broken, you are honest with yourself and with God, which allows you to hear Him more clearly and helps you respond to His process of molding and shaping you into a great leader.
As leaders, let us ask God for a revelation of leadership truths that make us better leaders, impacting leaders, leaders that follow the pattern of Biblical greats.
